TMNT Review

TMNT+Review

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back! From 2012 to 2017, the turtles had a Nickelodeon show, which I remember fondly. Until now the Ninja Turtle movies have been horrifying; making scary looking turtles with sunken eyes, really wide mouths, and a generally bulky body. In their reboot from 2016, they looked more like human lizards with modernized weapons instead of cool Kung Fu.

Thankfully their new movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem, does not follow the same style. The big change is that it’s animated more than the previous show. Following in the footsteps of the fantastic “Into the Spider Verse” the movie expertly blends 2d and 3d imagery to create beautiful scenes and manipulates frame rate to show layers in the Turtle’s emotions.

This movie I think has two main ideas. The first one is fitting in. The turtles have been sheltered by their master, Splinter, because he thinks that humans are evil and are scared of people who differ from them, which will ultimately end up hurting the Turtles.. Annoyed and wishing to fit in, the turtles start to sneak out at night to gain new experiences. They go to drive in movies and film themselves slicing up a watermelon in a youtube video. However, their main dream is to go to highschool, something odd for Turtles to dream about. When the villain, SupaFly, wants to destroy the human race, the turtles realize that it would destroy their dream, so they eventually defeat SupaFly, protecting their dream. Although it may seem abnormal, SupaFly’s motives for destroying the human race make sense. The second idea of the movie is the dislike of Humans because SupaFly, like Master Splinter, does not like humans because of past experiences, when the Turtles were young he took them out of the sewers immediately the humans threw things at them. He was discriminated against and targeted just because he looked different.
Overall I think this is a fantastic movie. I would give it a 10/10 rating and would recommend it for everyone.
