As the Beth Tfiloh seniors prepared to vote in the recent election, there were many important factors they kept in mind, the Israeli Hamas conflict being one of the biggest. This Middle Eastern conflict is an ongoing struggle over land and political rights, started by Hamas, a terrorist organization, when they attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. America, the biggest Israeli benefactor in the war so far, has helped Israel with military and negotiations and is recognized as a crucial partner to ending the war. However, the 2024 election candidates possess contrasting views on how to help Israel and Gaza. Additionally, the perspectives of various voter groups have become increasingly relevant regarding U.S. policy towards Israel. Arab Americans, for example, are expressing their concerns more critically, often withholding support from the Democratic Party. Dr. Tzvi Cohen emphasizes that while Jewish voters are often seen as the most influential on the subject, “Many others, like Christians, also care a lot about the Middle East.”
The candidates’ differing approaches to the Israeli Palestinian conflict have become a pivotal issue that could significantly reshape U.S. foreign policy. Donald Trump adopts a military-focused approach, aiming to strengthen alliances with Gulf countries and tighten sanctions on Gaza. His plans include direct negotiations with no preconditions, emphasizing an aggressive support for Israel. In contrast, Kamala Harris advocates for humanitarian efforts, aiming to call for an immediate ceasefire and increased American aid to Palestinians. Her strategy focuses on rebuilding Gaza and promoting stability through international partnerships. She hopes to provide Israel with a strong defense and security for the future.
As the election approached, Dr. Cohen urged our next generation of voters to consider how their choices will impact Israel’s future, especially considering the current events and progressions in the war. He advised students to “Keep your identity in mind, if you want to live as a proud Jew in America, you’ll need a strong Israel as well.” Both candidates, despite their differing plans, express a commitment to a two-state solution, highlighting the election’s significance for regional stability.
